The Printer Working Group

About the PWG

The Printer Working Group (or PWG) is a Program of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (ISTO) with member organizations including printer and multi-function device manufacturers, print server developers, operating system providers and print management application developers.  The group is chartered to make printers, multi-function devices, and the applications and operating systems supporting them work together better.

Active PWG Work Groups

Workgroup for Imaging Management Solutions (WIMS),  This working group is concerned with the definition of new and recasting of previously defined imaging device and service management elements for mapping into standard managment semantics and protocols.  These protocols include, but are not limited to, SNMP, CIM and Web Services Management.

Multifunction Device Working Group (MFD), The MFD working group is focusing on modeling of the MultiFunction Device (Print, Copy, Scan and Fax). Standardization of MFD model and semantics will support interoperability of devices and services in local and enterprise networks enabling improved job submission, job management and remote administration and support. The goal of the MFD project is to define a unified semantic model and set of abstract operations for the most common and essential service and device features of the MultiFunction Device.

PWG Semantic Model (SM) is a high level overview of the semantics that have been defined by the PWG. The primary document describes the semantic elements defined in various PWG documents and PWG documents submitted to the IETF. The Semantic Model also incorporates additions made by external groups addressing print systems. Every semantic element in the document includes a reference to the document and section that details the semantic definition. The specification also contains a high level description of the Actions that operate on the objects and attributes in the model. This document does not describe the mapping of the semantics onto a specific protocol or network environment. An XML Schema based on the Semantic Model document is included. This project also includes the process to allow additions to the Semantic Model specification and schema.

PWG MIB WG (PMP) , (Now a work item under the WIMS group) The group has developed a number of Management Information Base (MIB)standards for the management of printers, finishing devices, and imaging jobs. The group has completed a Port Monitor MIB that is now required by Microsoft for network printers to operate with the Vista OS. Currently the MIBs group is developing a specification to allow a multifunction device to use the existing printer alert table to report problems within the non-printing hardware.

The effort remains active as a work objective of the WIMS group to support future MIB development efforts and to maintain the related IANA registrations.

The Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), The IPP working group has developed a modern, full featured network printing protocol which is now the industry standard. IPP allows a print client to query a printer for its supported capabilities, features, and parameters to allow the selection of an appropriate printer for each print job. IPP also provides job information prior to, during, and at the end of job processing.

The IPP working group remains active for the maintenance of IANA registrations and PWG/ISTO standards, and to support current and future work items.

Imaging Device Security (IDS), The IDS working group is chartered to enable Hardcopy Device support in the  Network Assessment Protocols that measure and assess the health of client computers and other devices that are attached to enterprise class networks.

The group will define a set of common assessment attributes for Hardcopy Devices and will liaison with the specific Network Assessment Protocol efforts to include Hardcopy Device support in these protocols where necessary.  In the future, the IDS WG charter may be revised to allow the working group to deal with other types of Imaging Devices (Network Projectors, Displays, etc.) in the Network Assessment Protocols or other security related work items.
